A group of seven accused members of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
